Released on ECM in 1973, this masterpiece features an absolutely impeccable trio of Nordic jazz musicians: Jan Garbarek, Arild Andersen, and Edward Vesala. Alongside deeply improvised jazz steeped in a dark, densely atmospheric mood, the album also reveals the trio’s profound sensibility through its more ethnic-oriented pieces. A2 features Garbarek’s spiritual flute drifting quietly through the music, while B4 is a cover of a traditional Norwegian folk tune that recalls the world of Don Cherry and Old and New Dreams: against Vesala’s abstract drumming, Garbarek’s soprano saxophone and Andersen’s high-register arco bass play the folk-derived melody in unison, creating a strikingly experimental sound. It is precisely in performances such as these, where Nordic traditional music and free improvisation intersect so naturally, that the remarkable depth of these musicians becomes apparent.
