This is a 1986 album that features chamber music compositions by Finnish composers Erik Bergman and Kalevi Aho, both active since the 1970s. The performances are by the Jean Sibelius Quartet, with Jaakko Vuornos on violin, Jouko Mansnerus on viola, Seppo Kimanen on cello, and Shizuko Arai, a Japanese violinist residing in Finland, joining them. The A-side of the album, composed by Erik Bergman, consists of four movements created in 1982 upon commission for the Kuhmo Chamber Music Festival. The composition evolves with melodies that change like geometric patterns. The B-side, composed by Kalevi Aho, is made up of eight sections composed in 1971. It unfolds dramatically with layers of melodies depicting various emotional landscapes. The excellent recording captures the rich sounds of the string instruments, thanks to the unique reverb effect of the concert hall. I encourage you to give it a listen.
