A 1986 trio album led by John Abercrombie, one of ECM’s signature American guitarists, with drummer Peter Erskine and bassist Marc Johnson—three musicians closely associated with the label. A1 is a bright, uplifting piece, with Abercrombie’s guitar synthesizer spinning out light, fluid phrases over Erskine’s buoyant drumming and Johnson’s graceful bass lines. A3 is a nostalgic waltz-jazz number that moves with a supple groove and delicate sense of space. Throughout, the album delivers the polished, translucent contemporary jazz sound so characteristic of ECM. B1 is especially outstanding, its understated coolness concealing a deep and quietly compelling groove. Original German pressing.
