A 1980 album by New York-born guitarist John Abercrombie, who recorded extensively for the renowned German independent jazz label ECM. Leading a quartet featuring Richard Beirach on piano, George Mraz on bass, and Peter Donald on drums, Abercrombie explores a fragile yet deeply lyrical sound world. On A1 and B1, piano and electric guitar weave fluid melodies with subtle shifts in pace and intensity, supported by expansive, wide-open drumming and Mraz’s buoyant, spring-loaded bass lines. A2, meanwhile, delicately evokes a silent landscape gently veiled in a fine, mist-like rain. This wistful, poetic music—created by jazz musicians who had moved beyond the conventions of modern jazz—perfectly embodies the aesthetic ECM sought to cultivate. Simply beautiful. US pressing.
