A masterpiece and the first ECM release by the label’s flagship guitarist John Abercrombie, issued in 1975. This is a trio album featuring Jan Hammer (keyboards) and Jack DeJohnette (drums). From the very first track A1, it erupts into an all-out speed-picking showdown, with everyone playing at a ferocious, almost absurd intensity. Just when you’re overwhelmed by the relentless barrage, the music slips into a dark, ominous realm, thoroughly scrambling your senses—only for Jan Hammer’s funky, low-register keyboards to enter and lock everything into a thick, sticky groove that completely knocks you out. It’s astonishing how the mere presence of Jan Hammer can transform the music this dramatically. Far beyond the boundaries of jazz, this is already in the territory of progressive rock. Original German pressing.
