Released in 1974, this masterpiece was John Abercrombie’s debut album for ECM, where he would go on to become one of the label’s defining guitarists. It is a trio recording featuring Jan Hammer on keyboards and Jack DeJohnette on drums. A1 launches immediately into an outrageous display of rapid-fire playing, with all three musicians tearing through the music at a truly manic pace. Emerging from this overwhelming torrent of notes, the track suddenly enters a dark and sinister realm. Just as the listener’s senses have been thoroughly scrambled, Hammer’s low-slung, funky keyboards move in, creating a thick, sticky groove that delivers the final knockout blow. The sheer presence of Jan Hammer transforms the music into something extraordinary. Far beyond the boundaries of jazz, it reaches into the realm of progressive rock.
