A 1985 album by American minimalist composer John Adams, who has remained active from the mid-1970s through the 2000s, producing numerous masterpieces spanning modern classical, experimental, and electronic music, and later receiving the Pulitzer Prize. The work was commissioned as part of Meet the Composer’s orchestra residency program, and this recording features the San Francisco Symphony conducted by Edo de Waart. An expansive three-movement work lasting nearly 40 minutes, it represents an important development beyond the repetitive processes associated with minimalist composers such as Steve Reich and Philip Glass, bringing those techniques into contact with tonality and a distinctly Romantic sensibility. The result is extraordinarily dramatic and monumental.
