Released in 1980, this album is by American minimalist composer John Adams, who has remained active from the mid-1970s into the 2000s, producing numerous masterpieces that range from modern classical music to experimental and electronic works, as well as receiving the Pulitzer Prize. Side A contains the original string-septet version of “Shaker Loops,” the celebrated composition whose orchestral version, performed by the San Francisco Symphony, was featured in the guidebook OBSCURE SOUND REVISED EDITION. It is performed by the Ridge Quartet together with Dan Smiley, Judiyaba, and Gary Lowendusky. Side B features the piano work “Phrygian Gates,” composed between 1977 and 1978 and performed by Mack McCray. Both are magnificent pieces filled with Adams’ distinctive approach to minimalism.
