A double album released in 1979 by the legendary John Cage—an undisputed giant who played one of the most pivotal roles in the history of contemporary music, particularly through his development of chance operations. Composed between 1974 and 1975 for German-American pianist Grete Sultan, this recording features performances by Sultan herself. Based on the constellation charts of the southern sky created by Czech astronomer Antonín Bečvář, the piece is constructed using single tones and chords, disregarding rhythm and tonality, and instead expressing music through resonance—a hallmark of 1970s avant-garde. The work consists of 32 etudes, of which 16 are performed in this album.
