Album released in 1966 by John Coltrane, the undisputed jazz giant who made the leap from Sheets of Sound to spiritual free jazz. The album was joined with Freddie Hubbard (tp), Art Davis (b), Elvin Jones (ds), McCoy Tyner (p), Marion Brown (as), Pharoah Sanders (ts), Archie Shepp (ts), John Tchicai (as), Dewey Redman (tp) and Jimmy Garrison (b), all comrades in the pursuit of new jazz in New York at the time. The torrent of interplay described as Sheets of Sound reaches its highest level, and is a remarkable embodiment of free jazz for Coltrane. As the title suggests, it takes the listener into ascension. This is a 1982 reissue from the UK, which includes Edition II, which Coltrane himself requested to be replaced and was re-released the same year.
