This is the 1967 album by the legendary jazz giant John Coltrane, who made a remarkable leap from Sheets of Sound to spiritual free jazz. Produced by Bob Thiele two months after Coltrane's passing, this posthumous work features a quartet with Alice Coltrane (p), Jimmy Garrison (b), and Rashied Ali (ds). The title track A4 is his final recording. The other tracks were recorded during the same period as the album "Interstellar Space," released in 1974. On A2, Pharoah Sanders joins the quintet on piccolo flute, with Coltrane also playing the flute. This recording offers a glimpse into Coltrane's spiritual journey and quest for unity with the cosmos, an exploration that was tragically cut short.
