The final work recorded in 1967, the year of John Coltrane’s passing, by a quintet featuring Alice Coltrane on piano, Jimmy Garrison on bass, Rashied Ali on drums, and Pharoah Sanders on piccolo flute. The two tracks on side B present a torrent of impassioned improvisation from Coltrane, carrying forward the free-jazz intensity of the previous year’s Cosmic Music and the same year’s Interstellar Space. However, our highest recommendation goes to A2, where Coltrane’s flute, Alice’s piano, and Sanders’ piccolo flute weave together in a serene space, creating an extraordinary sense of timing, breath, and interplay. This is the 1980 Japanese reissue released by Victor.
