This album was released in 1966 by John Coltrane, the undisputed jazz giant who made the leap from Sheets of Sound to spiritual free. Jimmy Garrison (b), who had been the backbone of Coltrane's sound up to that point, was retained, while piano and drums replaced McCoy Tyner and Elvin Jones with Alice Coltrane and Rashied Ali, and Pharoah Sanders was added. The quintet performed live at the Vllage Vanguard in New York on 28 May 1966. Coltrane's signature tune 'Naima' is played for just under 15 minutes, while 'My Favorite Things', together with the introduction, is over 26 minutes long. The performance is a gem, a melody that embodies the burning spirit that seems to well up from deep within the subconscious. This is a historical masterpiece that all Pharoah Sanders lovers should listen to at least once.
