John Coltrane’s final leader album for Atlantic, recorded in 1961. Featuring a powerful lineup of Freddie Hubbard, Eric Dolphy, McCoy Tyner, Reggie Workman, Art Davis, and Elvin Jones, the album unfolds on a grand scale, driven by the deep low-end created by the two basses and a melodic sensibility that draws on Spanish and North African elements. The title track, stretching over 18 minutes, is a stunning performance: over a repeating bass line, percussive piano, and Jones’ large, swaying rhythmic pulse, Coltrane’s soprano saxophone rises with a prayer-like intensity. The exotic color added by Dolphy’s flute and Hubbard’s bright, forceful trumpet are also superb, pushing the music beyond the framework of hard bop and suggesting the open atmosphere of spiritual jazz just before its full emergence. It strongly anticipates the expanded modal expression that would continue into Coltrane’s later Impulse! period. 1976 US reissue.
