A collection of standards by John Coltrane’s classic quartet, and one of the defining albums of his Impulse! period. Recorded in the early 1960s, just as Coltrane was moving toward more intense musical exploration, this album finds him placing himself deeply inside the melodies, holding back excessive ornamentation and drawing out the inherent beauty of each composition. From the opening track, Coltrane’s tenor sounds remarkably tender, while McCoy Tyner’s piano, Jimmy Garrison’s bass, and Elvin Jones’s drums support his lyrical phrasing with a quiet, breathing sensitivity. “You Don’t Know What Love Is,” “What’s New,” and “Nancy” are all outstanding performances, rich in contrast despite their restrained tone. Japanese pressing released by Nippon Columbia in 1976. Includes insert.
A2: You Don’t Know What Love is
