An album recorded for Impulse! in 1965 by the one and only giant saxophonist John Coltrane and his classic quartet. On A1, one of the album’s finest moments, Coltrane’s tenor and soprano saxophone retain the outline of the theme while diving deep into a dense, modal vortex of sound, carried by McCoy Tyner’s powerful chords, Jimmy Garrison’s deep bass and Elvin Jones’ surging drums, rising with an almost prayer-like exaltation. On B1, a tender and compassionate tenor melody unfolds over a repetitive rhythm, while the heated improvisation gradually expands the space around it. A vital work in which a standard-like surface intersects with spiritual intensity, revealing the profound inner transformation of Coltrane during his Impulse! period. Japanese pressing released by Toshiba in 1973, with insert.
