This 1966 release comes from California-born alto saxophonist John Handy, who first drew attention in the 1950s as a member of Charles Mingus’s group and later developed a strong interest in Eastern and Indian philosophy. The album features live recordings from his 1965 appearance at the Monterey Jazz Festival in California, performing with a quintet consisting of Don Thompson (b), Jerry Hahn (g), Terry Clarke (ds), and Michael White (vl). With guitar and violin—two string instruments—intertwining with Handy’s alto sax, the ensemble builds lyrical, emotionally rich melodies, all clearly rooted in the expressive lineage of John Coltrane. Side A runs 19:36, while Side B stretches to 26:33, offering two extended sessions of exceptional depth and feeling.
