This 1977 album by American pianist John Lewis—who began his career in the late 1940s performing with the orchestras of Dizzy Gillespie and Charlie Parker, and later collaborated with many jazz greats including Miles Davisand Lester Young—marks another milestone in his long and distinguished career. From the mid-1950s onward, Lewis co-founded and led the Modern Jazz Quartet alongside Milt Jackson, Percy Heath, and Kenny Clarke.
This record was the first release in a self-produced series launched by Teo Macero, best known as the producer of Miles Davis’s albums. It features a trio with Michael Moore on bass and Connie Kay—also a member of the MJQ—on drums. The album includes several pieces previously performed by the MJQ, showcasing refined, urban-style bop rendered in a calm and sophisticated atmosphere. The Japanese edition is the original release.
