This is a 1986 leader album by American saxophonist John Stubblefield, known for his impressive contributions to albums by AACM-associated artists like Lester Bowie, Joseph Jarman, Maurice McIntyre, and Anthony Braxton, as well as his participation in Miles Davis' funk masterpiece 'Get Up With It.' Stubblefield's quintet for this album includes the talented female pianist Geri Allen, who has released outstanding works on Germany's Minor Music label, along with Charnett Moffett on bass, Victor Lewis on drums and percussion, and Mino Cinelu on percussion and vocals. The album offers a blend of styles, from the groovy and percussion-driven spiritual jazz of A1, where Stubblefield weaves emotional melodies over a rhythm section infused with percussion, to the melancholic play of Geri Allen on the Yamaha DX-7 in the impressionistic jazz of A2. A3 stands out with Cinelu's primitive vocals, creating a fantastic Afro-jazz vibe. Throughout the album, there's a rich infusion of Afro, Latin, and Caribbean influences, all wrapped up in a refined ensemble performance. Highly recommended.
