This album was released in 1966 by Danish saxophonist John Tchicai and American saxophonist Archie Shepp, two of the key figures who contributed to the rise of free jazz in New York in the 1960s. Recorded in 1963 with J.C. Moses (ds) and Don Moore (b), the quartet's performance is very interesting and shows the breath of New York loft jazz, which was beginning to move away from the hard bop style toward innovation. Shepp's tenor is still not so chaotic, and he interplays with a distinctive dead tone, staccato and detailed phrasing. Moses' drumming has a groove to it. This is a Japanese pressing from Japan Phonogram's <Fontana New Jazz Series> in 1984.
