Featured in the guidebook OBSCURE SOUND REVISED EDITION, this is a masterpiece released in 1981 by the singular American trumpeter/composer Jon Hassell, a visionary artist who created countless works conjuring bizarre, fantastical worlds through his highly distinctive playing techniques. It is the second installment in his Fourth World series, following the previous year’s Possible Musics, and features contributions from Brian Eno and Michael Brook. Alongside indescribably unique sound effects that seem to sample bubbles and water, as well as an array of percussive textures, Hassell’s unmistakable, heavily treated trumpet tone drifts through space with an exotic presence. Moving freely between jazz, experimental music, and ambient, the album opens up a one-of-a-kind world that could perhaps be described as contemporary ambient jazz. Needless to say, this comes very, very highly recommended.
