A 1982 album featuring a performance of Atonale Musik, Op. 20, an atonal work composed between 1920 and 1922 by Austrian composer and music theorist Josef Matthias Hauer, who pursued his own approach to twelve-tone music along a path distinct from Arnold Schönberg while working as a schoolteacher. The score was published in 1923. The performance is by American pianist Joseph Kubera, who has also worked with figures including John Cage, La Monte Young, and Morton Feldman. The work consists of 20 short pieces. Rather than relying heavily on harsh dissonance, it creates its distinctive sound through chords containing sixths and sevenths, simple rhythmic figures, and lightly contrapuntal writing, all unfolding in an order quite different from conventional tonal music. By listening intuitively to the color of the intervals, the tension and release between sounds, and the movement of the resonance itself, one can experience Hauer’s highly individual approach to twelve-tone music, markedly different from that of Schönberg. An obscure and fascinating recording.
