Released in 1976, this duo album brings together American trombonist Joseph Bowie—brother of Lester and Byron Bowie, and a musician who played with Frank Lowe, Sam Rivers, The Human Arts Ensemble, and The Jazz Composer’s Orchestra—and American saxophonist Oliver Lake, known for his collaborations with Sunny Murray, Julius Hemphill, Hamiet Bluiett, and many others. The record features striking horn duets that embody a free-spirited yet unmistakably personal aesthetic: from the interplay of melodic unisons and ensemble passages colliding with free improvisation on A1, to the fascinating contrasts of lyrical lines against restless, shifting textures on A2. A superb document of two singular voices meeting in fearless dialogue.
A1: Zaki
A2: Orange Butterflies
