An album released in 1980 by American saxophonist Julius Hemphill, who organized the art collective Black Artists Group in St. Louis in 1968 and dedicated himself to exploring avant-garde jazz alongside musicians such as Oliver Lake, Luther Thomas, and Hamiet Bluiett. In the 1970s, Hemphill immersed himself in New York's free jazz scene, participating in numerous sessions. This album features a quartet with Olu Dara (trumpet), Abdul Wadud (cello), and Warren Smith (percussion), and includes recordings made in a studio in Milan, Italy, that same year. The A-side is particularly noteworthy, beginning with track A1, where the flute and percussion create a very quiet tension that evokes the image of wandering through a dense jungle. Track A2 features Wadud’s (possibly electrified?) cello, producing distorted sounds reminiscent of an electric guitar. The performance on the A-side is especially interesting, balancing tension between moments of stillness and intensity.
