Released in 1984 in a limited pressing of 880 copies, this album documents a recording made during the Japanese tour of Kailash Chandra Pande, a vocalist regarded as an authentic inheritor of the Indian classical music tradition. The album was produced by journalist/nonfiction writer Takashi Tachibana and released on his own independent label. Japanese tabla player Tadahiro Wakabayashi also takes part. Side A features “Raga Yaman,” a raga built around a 16-beat cycle. It begins quietly, with Pande’s voice unfolding over the drone of the tambura, then gradually rises in tension as the tabla rhythm enters midway through. Side B features “Raga Gaud Malhar,” a rainy-season raga based on a composition by Ustad Inayat Hussain Khan. Both sides open into a deeply meditative world that evokes a sense of oneness with the cosmos. Comes with a 10-page booklet featuring a conversation between Takashi Tachibana and Kappa Senoo, along with liner notes, as well as magazine and newspaper clippings related to the release of this album. Serial number printed on the back cover. The artwork is also exceptionally elaborate, with a different image pasted onto each individual copy.
