Kanguru
Dreaming
Larrkin Records (Australia) 1980
LRB 096 (LP)
sleeve : NM
media : NM/NM
Only album by the Australian group Kanguru, self-released in 1976, featuring percussionist Guy Madigan (later of Sirocco), violist Cleis Pearce (of Mackenzie Theory), and a cast of otherwise virtually unknown musicians. This copy is the 1980 reissue licensed by Sydney’s Larrikin Records, a label specializing in Australian music. A deep, otherworldly trip mixing Indian classical instrumentation—pakhawaj, tanpura, sarod, tabla—with electric viola and didgeridoo, blending raga-based psychedelia with Aboriginal earthy vibes. The result is a hypnotic, meditative raga-rock gem from the far reaches of the Antipodes. If you’re into West Coast new age, or ECM’s ethno-jazz pioneers like Codona and Oregon, you’ll feel right at home here. Highly, highly recommended. This is archival deadstock copy.
A1: Ras Lila (Prayer of Reincarnation)
A2: Waves of Aquarius
B1: Kanara Prakar (Evening Raga of Devotion)
B2: Invitation to Dance (Australian Raga)
