A 1972 release by German pianist and vibraphonist Karl Berger, who emerged as a key figure on the free jazz scene in the mid-1960s and made a strong impression through his work with Don Cherry as well. Recorded that same year in Munich, Germany, the home base of enja, this album features a quartet with Masahiko Sato (p), Adelhard Roidinger (b), and Allen Blairman (ds). Highlights include A1 and A3, where Berger’s vibraphone lines tumble out with remarkable fluidity over a rhythm section full of driving momentum, as well as B3, based on a score by Irene Berger, with bouncing drums and bass generating an irresistibly lively groove. The thrilling sense of movement throughout is simply superb.
