Released in 1982, this album is by Dennis Russell Davies, a conductor who has worked with numerous orchestras since the early 1970s. Here, however, Davies performs solo piano on a composition by his longtime associate Keith Jarrett. Recorded in Ludwigsburg, Germany in 1977, the work extends across both sides of the record for well over thirty minutes. There is something uniquely fascinating about a composition by Jarrett, himself one of the great pianists, being interpreted by Davies, primarily known as a conductor. Having also performed Jarrett’s music in orchestral settings, Davies brings a particularly deep understanding to the work, delivering an exceptionally beautiful and richly lyrical performance. A wonderful album that reveals Jarrett’s composition from a distinctly different perspective.
