A duo album released in 1973 by Keith Jarrett, one of ECM’s most iconic jazz pianists, and drummer Jack DeJohnette. Opening with cymbals and electric piano drifting through a field of silence, A1 suddenly blossoms into an expansive groove driven by DeJohnette’s open-ended drumming and Jarrett’s psychedelic electric-piano tones. A2 moves from an elegant interplay of piano and ethnic percussion into a latter half where an earthy flute melody takes flight, while B2 features similarly organic flute lines over taut, sharply defined percussion. A landmark work that anticipated the organic, ethnically inflected sound both musicians would continue to explore. DeJohnette’s endlessly inventive drumming and percussion are especially outstanding. This is the original Japanese pressing, released by Trio Records.
