Released in 1975, this album is by American pianist Keith Jarrett, who rose to prominence while still in his twenties through historic masterpieces such as Solo Concerts and The Köln Concert. A composition for string orchestra and saxophone, the work features the Südfunk Symphony Orchestra of Stuttgart, Germany, together with Jarrett’s trusted Norwegian saxophonist Jan Garbarek. Jarrett does not perform on the album himself, instead taking the role of conductor. The combination of an orchestral composition with freely improvised saxophone reflects an approach unique to a jazz musician, while Jarrett’s extraordinary talent as a composer can be felt throughout every detail of the work. A gem of an album that crosses freely between jazz and contemporary classical music, perfectly embodying the distinctive artistic vision of ECM. Highly recommended.
