Keith Jarrett
Staircase / Sand
ECM Records/Trio Records (Japan) 1976
PA-7171~72 (2LP) gatefold sleeve. w/insert.
sleeve : VG+(dirts.)
media : EX+/EX+,EX+/EX+(some slightly noise.)
A superb 2LP solo piano set from 1977 by American pianist Keith Jarrett, already internationally acclaimed in his twenties through historic masterworks such as Solo Concerts and The Köln Concert. The album comprises four extended suites—“Staircase,” “Hourglass,” “Sundial,” and “Sand”—each divided into three parts. Every suite is so fully realized that it could easily stand as an independent album in its own right. Taken together, they form an expansive, deeply contemplative statement that transcends jazz categorization altogether, standing as a major work of contemporary piano music. All pieces were recorded in 1976 at Davout Studio, Paris. Notably, the sonic character feels somewhat distinct from Jarrett’s other recordings of the period—likely still a Steinway & Sons grand, yet with a subtly altered tonal bloom, perhaps owing to the studio’s particular reverberant acoustics.
