A 1984 album by Ken Hyder’s Big Team, led by Scottish drummer/percussionist Ken Hyder, the man behind such standout works as Land of Stone on JAPO in 1977 and Humanity on the UK’s Impetus label in 1986. Dedicated to the musicians who deeply shaped Hyder’s own approach—among them Philly Joe Jones, Max Roach, and Roy Haynes—this set features two extended sessions, running close to 19 minutes on side A and 18 on side B. Joined by Paul Rogers and Roberto Bellatalla on basses, Elton Dean on sax and wood flute, Chris Biscoe on sax, Ted Emmett on trumpet, and Nick Evans on trombone, the septet delivers a powerful, deeply charged performance that comes remarkably close to Afro-spiritual jazz at its most intense. A superb record.

A: Jute’s Oot/A Night in Benbecula
B: Owed to Philly Jore/Hipsters, FLipsters and Soapy Soutar’s Sisters (first part)
