A 1984 album by Ken Hyder’s Big Team, led by Scottish drummer and percussionist Ken Hyder, known for such acclaimed works as Land of Stone, released on ECM-affiliated label JAPO in 1977, and Humanity, issued by the UK label Impetus in 1986. Dedicated to musicians who had a profound influence on Hyder himself, including Philly Joe Jones, Max Roach, and Roy Haynes, the album consists of two extended performances, with Side A running for 19 minutes and Side B approaching 18 minutes. Hyder is joined by Paul Rogers (b), Roberto Bellatalla (b), Elton Dean (sax, wood flute), Chris Biscoe (sax), Ted Emmett (tp), and Nick Evans (tb) in a powerful septet performance. A superb recording charged with raw energy and intensity, pushing remarkably close to the territory of Afro-spiritual jazz.
