A superb 1986 release by Ken Hyder’s Talisker, the group led by drummer/percussionist Ken Hyder — who also recorded the classic Land of Stone (1977) under the same name for ECM’s sister label JAPO. Personnel includes Olly Blanchflower (bass), Sylvia Hallett (violin), Don Paterson (guitar) and Davie Webster (alto sax). From the beautifully pastoral soundscapes of A1/B1, where layered violin and bass lines unfold with quiet majesty, to the strikingly exotic atmosphere of B2 — evoking the feel of unknown folk traditions — this album carries forward the distinctive world of Land of Stone, The Last Battle and The White Light, while pushing further into more experimental, organic territory. A deeply accomplished work and an unreserved recommendation.

A1: Kirstie’s Heartsong
B1: Drum Salute & Lament for Jore Hyder
B2: Really’ I’m Telling You!
