American multi-instrumentalist Ken McIntyre, known for his work with groups such as The Jazz Composer’s Orchestra, Bill Dixon’s 7-Tette, and Beaver Harris’s 360 Degree Music Experience, as well as for his own outstanding recordings since the early 1960s, released this leader album in 1974 on the esteemed Danish label SteepleChase. The session features celebrated Japanese trumpeter Terumasa Hino — highly regarded not only in New York but also across Europe — alongside Richie Harper (p), Alonzo Gardner (b), Andrei Strobert (ds), and Andy Vega (perc), forming a superb sextet. Highlights include B1, evoking the gentle sway of a calm sea, and B3, a striking piece of ethnic jazz driven by Afro-Latin flavored rhythms. Throughout, the album showcases a brilliant balance of free-form interplay and contemporary sensibility, resulting in a truly exceptional performance and a standout recording in McIntyre’s catalog.
