A 1974 leader album by American multi-instrumentalist Ken McIntyre, who worked with groups including the Jazz Composer’s Orchestra, the Bill Dixon 7-Tette, and Beaver Harris’s 360 Degree Music Experience, while also producing a series of outstanding recordings with his own groups from the early 1960s onward. Released by the highly regarded Danish label SteepleChase, the album was recorded at a Copenhagen studio that same year by a quartet featuring Kenny Drew (p), Bo Stief (b), and Alex Riel (ds). Alongside McIntyre’s original compositions, the group performs pieces by Thelonious Monk and Sonny Rollins, as well as several standards, delivering consistently superb and assured performances throughout. Every track is excellent, but particular highlights include A3, a spiritual-jazz number driven by aggressive rhythms and soaring flute, and B2, an elegant interpretation of John Coltrane’s immortal classic “Naima.” Original Danish pressing.

A1: Bootsie
A3: Mercedes
B2: Naima
