Guitarist Kenny Burrell, who was so profoundly influenced by Duke Ellington that he later taught a course on Ellington’s life and work at UCLA, released this double album in 1975 featuring covers of many Ellington classics. The lineup includes Thad Jones on trumpet, Joe Henderson on reeds, Jimmy Smith and Jimmy Jones on keyboards, Mel Lewis on percussion, and a total of eleven outstanding musicians. Highlights include side A2, a lively arrangement of a historic Afro-Cuban jazz masterpiece, and side A4, a graceful reinterpretation of one of Ellington’s most celebrated compositions, often revisited in the worlds of exotica and mood music.
