Released in 1984, this album as a leader is by Canadian trumpeter Kenny Wheeler, who left behind numerous masterpieces for ECM through albums such as Deer Wan and Gnu High, as well as through his work with the group Azimuth. The quintet features familiar ECM figures Dave Holland on bass, Jack DeJohnette on drums, and John Taylor on piano, joined by Michael Brecker on tenor saxophone. From cool, straight-ahead post-bop and modal jazz to dynamically flowing contemporary jazz and floating pieces imbued with an urban atmosphere, the album covers a wide range while maintaining the fresh, crystalline sound characteristic of ECM throughout. Exceptionally well balanced from beginning to end, this is a thoroughly satisfying and beautifully crafted album. Original German pressing.
