A 1988 album by Kiné Lam, one of Senegal’s leading female vocalists. Active since the 1970s, she was formerly a member of Dakar’s Théâtre National Daniel Sorano before launching her solo career and forming her own group, Le Kaggu. The album features a superb late-1980s mbalax sound, driven by the propulsive rhythms of distinctly Senegalese percussion reminiscent of sabar and tama, supple bouncing basslines, shimmering synthesizers, guitar, and horn sections. While retaining the feel of traditional griot-style singing, the arrangements also incorporate electric textures and drum-machine-like production, resulting in a strikingly modern take on Senegalese music characteristic of the era.
