This is a 1978 leader album by German drummer Klaus Weiss, who has been producing high-quality music since the 1960s — from cool modern jazz with the Klaus Doldinger Quintett, the George Gruntz Quintet, and his own groups, to kraut jazz-funk with Niagara. Recorded in a Hamburg studio the same year, the album features a quartet of German jazz musicians — Roman Schwaller (tenor saxophone), Gunter Moll (guitar), Rocky Knauer (bass) — joined by Mal Waldron (piano). The A-side, which includes three pieces composed by Waldron as a tribute to John Coltrane, is particularly outstanding. It presents a prayerful sound world imbued with deep spirituality, reminiscent of Coltrane’s eternal masterpiece A Love Supreme. Much like Massimo Urbani’s 1980 album Dedication to A.A. & J.C. Max Mood released on Red Records, this is a work overflowing with profound love and respect for Coltrane. Very highly recommended.
