World-renowned for their definitive interpretations of Steve Reich, the Kronos Quartet—David Harrington (violin), John Sherba (violin), Hank Dutt (viola) and Joan Jeanrenaud (cello)—deliver this remarkable 1985 release. Joined by special guest Ron Carter, the group reimagines a selection of Thelonious Monk classics in elegant string quartet arrangements. Side A presents a suite-like sequence with Carter on “Well, You Needn’t,” “Rhythm-a-ning,” “Crepuscule with Nellie” and “Off Minor / Epistrophy.” Side B opens with a spacious, gently floating take on the timeless “’Round Midnight,” while B3/B4 revisit Duke Ellington compositions associated with Monk. Closing the set, the historic “Brilliant Corners” receives a dramatic, expansive treatment. Every track is transformed through the Kronos Quartet’s singular vision—an inspired and highly recommended set.
