A 1985 double album by Indian classical vocalist Lakshmi Shankar, sister-in-law of Ravi Shankar and a distinguished performer of Hindustani music in the Patiala gharana tradition. Released by Ocora, the renowned label devoted to traditional music and field recordings from around the world. Accompanied by Sadanand Naimpalli on tabla and Joanna Foresta on tambura, Shankar also plays the swaramandal, an Indian zither, while performing ragas in khyal, one of the principal forms of Hindustani classical vocal music, alongside compositions of her own. A magnificent recording centered on Shankar’s exceptionally beautiful voice and deeply meditative singing, best appreciated with close and attentive listening.
