The second album as a leader by American-born French pianist Laurent De Wilde, who first gained recognition as a member of trumpeter Eddie Henderson’s group. Recorded in 1989 with Jack DeJohnette (ds) and Ira Coleman (b), the trio delivers a superb set that highlights De Wilde’s graceful and highly articulate piano playing. A1 is particularly exhilarating, with De Wilde’s melodies pouring out in an almost endless rush over DeJohnette’s remarkably open and crisp drumming. B1 takes a relatively orthodox approach while transforming Herbie Hancock’s composition with a deeply expressive touch, while B2 stands out for the thrilling interplay between De Wilde’s piano and the grooving rhythm section. The final track, B3, is also highly recommended, offering a beautifully restrained and lyrical interpretation of a Wayne Shorter classic.
