This is a 1981 album by Dutch pianist Leo Cuypers, who also participated as a member of the Baden-Baden Free Jazz Orchestra on the masterpiece live album Gittin’ To Know Y’All released on MPS in 1970. A trio work with fellow Dutch mavericks Arjen Gorter (b) and Han Bennink (ds, per). Opening with Bennink’s explosive drumming chased by Cuypers’ flowing piano on Side A1, followed by Side A2 featuring Hennink’s frenzied bass clarinet, then Side B4 with its wonderful combination of a grooving rhythm section and elegant piano, and Side B5 which develops from a beautiful piano solo into a torrent of free jazz—this album delivers breathtakingly thrilling performances throughout. Bennink’s drumming is, as always, insanely powerful.
