This album, released in 1979 as the fourth installment of the Musiques De L'Asie Traditionnelle series from the French world music label Playa Sound—founded in 1974 by Alain Normand—captures an evening ritual performed by the monks of the Tibetan Buddhist monastery Boudhanath in Nepal. The recording resonates with the sounds of metal percussion such as cymbals and bells, deep, earth-shaking drums, and the long horns believed to be a type of shawm producing a tone reminiscent of a charumera. The vivid, realistic sound is truly remarkable.
