Released in 1983, this double album is by trumpeter Lester Bowie of the Art Ensemble of Chicago, the group virtually synonymous with African-rooted avant-garde jazz. Dedicated to the memory of Bowie’s mother, the album is divided into two distinctly different parts. The first record features a full band with Ari Brown on tenor and soprano saxophones, Art Matthews on piano, Fred Williams on bass, Phillip Wilson on drums, and vocalists Fontella Bass and David Peaston. Ranging from warm New Orleans-style jazz to free jazz, the performances trace Bowie’s musical roots with remarkable depth and refinement. The second record is devoted largely to Bowie’s abstract solo trumpet performances. His avant-garde techniques push the music into truly experimental territory—at one point dipping the trumpet into water to create bubbling sounds, and elsewhere playing it into the body of a grand piano to exploit its resonance. Superb from beginning to end. Original German pressing.
