A 1985 album by Lester Bowie’s Brass Fantasy, led by trumpeter Lester Bowie, also a leading figure in the Art Ensemble of Chicago, one of the most iconic groups in free and experimental jazz. Opening with A1, a rendition of the old jazz standard that gives the album its title, the record presents a roots-oriented form of brass jazz deeply connected to African and Black musical traditions, with Bowie’s profound love for New Orleans jazz evident throughout. What makes the album particularly remarkable is that it never lapses into mere nostalgia, instead transforming those traditions into a fresh and forward-looking form of jazz.
