Very obscure one has arrived. Released in 1999, this album is by Lilys, the California indie rock band whose 1992 debut In the Presence of Nothing has gained a certain cult reputation as a shoegaze classic. This work was issued as the 15th installment in Darla Records’ Bliss Out series, which focused on ambient, electronics, and instrumental music. While Lilys are generally associated with shoegaze in their early period and later with a more psychedelic rock direction, this album overturns that image entirely, presenting driving rock and electronics strongly influenced by the Düsseldorf school of krautrock, represented by groups such as Kraftwerk and Neu!. Across six excellent tracks, thick beat of drums, smoky and floating synthesizers create a distinctive and highly atmospheric sound. Highly recommended.
