An album released in 1987 by the UK jazz group Loverly, featuring vocal improviser Maggie Nicols, known for her collaborations with Julie Tippetts and her participation on Alfred Harth’s ECM masterpiece “This Earth!”. From the mysterious intro of A3, where soprano sax and bass drift quietly before evolving into a fast-paced, percussive Turkish ethno-jazz groove interwoven with exotic vocals and horns, to B4, a Yoruba jazz piece filled with expansive stereo textures of primal African percussion and soaring alto sax, the album captures a free-spirited fusion of sounds from across the globe — African, South American, Middle Eastern, and swing-era jazz alike. A superb and adventurous work where Nicols’s endlessly shape-shifting vocal expressions truly shine.
