American pianist Mal Waldron has been at the forefront of the music scene for nearly 50 years, from the 1950s to the early 2000s, and is best known for his astonishing jazz-rock album "The Call", the first release on the Japo label. On this album released in 1978, Disc 1 features a sextet featuring Terumasa Hino (tp), Steve Lacy (ss), Hermann Breuer (tb), Cameron Brown (b), and Makaya Ntshoko (dr), while disc 2 features Waldron's piano solo. Disc 1, which is a post-bop deep session, which features a wonderfully aggressive cornet performance by a young Terumasa Hino, but disc 2, which allows you to fully enjoy Waldron's colorful solo piano, is also excellent. The design on the back of the sleeve is also reminiscent of the aforementioned "The Call". I highly recommend it.
